Miriam Mincieli

Miriam Mincieli, a long time area resident, died Friday, August 14, 2015.  She was 100 years old.  Miriam was born on July 25, 1915 and was the oldest child of Ida Walter and William Steyer.  She and her siblings grew up in the South Bronx where her father was a well-respected butcher.  In 1932 Miriam started to spend her summers in Lake Peekskill, Putnam Valley after her mother purchased a summer home there for the family.  Miriam married Victor Mincieli in 1954 and together they were the loving parents of two daughters, Suzanne and Frances.  For 33 years Miriam was employed by the New York City Department of Parks in the Bronx where she was a faithful, conscientious and esteemed employee until her retirement in 1970. 

An avid gardener, Miriam and traveled to Maine with her mother and would return with 1,500 evergreen saplings.  The trips inspired her to open up a small nursery in Putnam County.  She was a Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener and won many prizes at Grange fairs.  A vital part of the local community, Miriam was active in the Putnam Valley Garden Club, the Lake Peekskill Civic Association, the Putnam Valley Seniors and the St. Columbanus Altar and Rosary Society.  She was an active bowler and was also a member of the Park Central Hotel Track and Field team.  Miriam raised champion Gordon Setters and was a fan of dog shows.  She was a talented artist and enjoyed painting with oils and pastels.  A significant number of her artworks are on display at the Putnam Valley Senior Center.

Miriam is survived by her loving daughters Suzanne Murphy and Frances Martin.  She is also survived by her 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren and her nieces and nephews.  Miriam was well liked and well respected among her family and friends.  She will be greatly missed.

Visiting hours are on Sunday, August 16th from 4-8 PM at the HERITAGE FUNERAL HOME, Morrissey Drive, Putnam Valley.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, August 17th at 11 AM at the Church of the North American Martyrs in Putnam Valley and interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
