John B. McManus
Died: Jul 25, 2018

John Brendan McManus was born in the Bronx, NY on June 12, 1926, to his immigrant Irish parents, Owen and Margaret.  John was almost “born at sea” as his mother was 9 months pregnant when his parents sailed into New York Harbor shortly before his birth.  John’s father died when John was only 12 years old, and he was left to serve as “the man of the house” for he, his mother and his brother, Eugene.

John attended Cardinal Hayes High School and after graduating in 1944, served his country with honor in the Merchant Marines during World War II.  After the war ended, John enrolled in Iona College and went to night school on the GI Bill.  He eventually went to work for New York Life Insurance Company and for over 60 years was a highly-respected personal life insurance agent.

He married Vera Mae Auer in 1953 and enjoyed a 64-year marriage to her up until the time of his death.  John and Vera had 3 children – Kathleen, John and Timothy.  John was also blessed with three grandchildren later on in life – Alexandra, Emilia and Matthew John.

John was a very religious man who loved the Catholic Church and served as both Lector and Eucharistic Minister at his parish, St. Columbanus.  John also loved sports and he loved vacationing in Florida during baseball’s spring training season. He loved Big Band music, and the old black-and-white movies he grew up watching.  He also loved saying The Rosary.

John died peacefully on July 25, 2018 at the age of 92 after battling complications of pneumonia.  His smile, his quick wit, and his honesty and integrity will be greatly missed – as well as his unconditional love for family and friends.

John B. McManus, you were a beloved husband, a devoted father and a loyal friend.  God Bless you always, John Brendan
