The religious services at 4PM will begin the Rite of Catholic Burial for both Janine and Joan. Please share this information.

Janine Mitchell died suddenly on March 27, 2021. Janine was born in Cold Spring, New York at the old Butterfield hospital on May 6, 1961, to her loving parents who pre-deceased her Patrick J Mitchell and Joan C Dougherty Mitchell. She is survived by her two brothers Scott Mitchell and Keith Mitchell and by her two nieces Lauren Mitchell and Nicole Mitchell. She is also survived by many cousins and two beloved aunts.

Janine grew up in Putnam Valley with a house full of boys both brothers and cousins she loved her country home and keeping up with the boys that’s where she found her love of dirt bikes. She raced right along with the boys and was proud of it. She graduated from Lakeland high school and went to work for General motors in Tarrytown when that career ended, she began another. She was a bartender/bar manager for her family’s establishment The Spruce Hill Inn in Putnam Valley.
Janine had lots of interest she loved to cook and try different recipes she loved especially cooking with her mom for the bar planning different occasions and celebrations, they had the best friendship and love to laugh and just be together. She was a dirt bike enthusiast she loved racing and she loved watching her brothers and cousins at the racetrack. She like football and lived and died for her team the Dallas Cowboys. She loved the color purple. She loved rock ‘n’ roll, but she also loved the quiet of the woods. She like to be behind the bar it put a barrier between her and people which she felt comfortable with when she made a friend of you, she was as loyal as could be. She loved lots of different kinds of music and booking entertainment for the Spruce lead her to the one true love in her life, Nick Vara.
Nick was the drummer for Direct Drive - a favorite at the Spruce Hill Inn. Nick made her feel loved and secure and she often expressed publicly her love for her “Drummer Boy”. She loved animals and over the years took in many stray cats, dogs, raccoons, and even a skunk that she called “Stinky”. You name I; if it was an underdog, Janine wanted to take care of it.
In her final years she lived in Highland Falls but recently saw the dream of owning her own home realized as she and Nick bought a home in Wurtsboro New York. They were looking forward to retirement and quieter years. Her family of Nick, her dog, Theo the wonder dog made her very happy, it was really all she needed.
Janine will be mourned by many the only consolation is she has joined her mom again as she desperately missed her best friend. In lieu of flowers please give a donation to a charity of your choice in Janine’s honor, or better yet, adopt a pet that needs a home. This would make Janine very happy.
Memorial Services for her will be from 2-5 PM on Saturday, April 17th at the Heritage Funeral Home, Morrissey Drive, Putnam Valley. Please join us.
