Obituaries
Richard James Carroll, of Seaside Park, NJ and formerly of Putnam Valley, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 30, 2017 after a brief illness.
Richard was born in New York City on February 1, 1937 to John and Marion (McGilloway) Carroll. After moving to Putnam Valley in the mid-1950’s, Rich served in the US Air Force. Upon returning home, he met and married the love of his life, Merilyn Kane on April 18, 1959. Making their home in Putnam Valley, they were both ...active in their community and church, particularly with C.C.D., and the Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department where Rich was a member and served as Chief.
Rich had a long and varied career with turns as a machinist, school bus driver and telecommunications specialist for IBM, but he is best remembered as the local newspaperman with the ubiquitous white van. Included among his many hobbies was coin collecting, Irish music, the beach, and good steaks; but his family is where he found his greatest joy, and a good laugh was of utmost importance to him.
Rich and Merrie moved to Seaside Park, NJ in 1993, where they have entertained family and friends alike for nearly 25 years. Both of them have remained active in their new community, serving St. Catherine of Siena Church where is was a daily Communicant, numerous Catholic charities, C.C.D., the Legion of Mary, Right to Life and Meals on Wheels.
Richard is survived by his precious rock of a wife, Merilyn Francis Carroll to whom he was married for nearly 60 years, and by his 5 proud and loving children: Daniel Carroll and his wife Sheila, Mary Daly and her husband Bob, Patricia Rinaldi and her husband Richie, Kathleen Lomino and her husband Bobby and John Carroll. He is also survived by his 11 cherished grandchildren: Daniel, Sean, Kevin, Rachel, Samantha, Deanna, Richard, Bobby, LeAnna, Matty, and Merrie. Richard was predeceased by his two sons, Richard and Matthew.
The family will recieve friends on Sunday from 4-8 PM at the HERITAGE FUNERAL HOME, Morrissey Drive. Putnam Valley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, December 4th at 10 AM at the Church of the North American Martyrs and interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Catherine of Siena Church, 50 E. Side St., Seaside Park, NJ 08752
