William F. Feeney

William Francis Feeney of Putnam Valley, New York, passed peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. He was 97.

The youngest of seven, Bill was born on November 28, 1920 to Charles and Margaret Burke Feeney in Uniontown, PA. At the age of 17 Bill joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a popular early conservation program and a major part of FDR’s New Deal. He moved to New York City in 1937 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1942. During World War II he served aboard the USS Relief, a hospital ship in the South Pacific. He was discharged with the rank of Ship’s Cook First Class in October 1945.

On November 19, 1944, Bill married Lillian Mahoney in the Bronx, moving to Lake Peekskill. He worked at the J.C. Penney Company in New York City. In April 1953, he began employment with General Motors at their Tarrytown plant, and also worked part-time as a seasonal police officer for the Town of Putnam Valley. He moved with his family to Spruce Knolls in 1965.

Following early retirement from General Motors in December 1974 as General Foreman in the body shop, he was a real estate salesman for three years, and for five years a crew chief employed by the Westchester Community Opportunity Program assigned to Putnam Weatherization.

A communicant of St. Columbanus Church, Bill was a Past Commander of Putnam Valley American Legion Post 1517 and helped build the American Legion Hall on Oscawana Lake Road. He served several years on the town’s Board of Standards and Appeals; was President of the local Democratic Club 1968-70 and 1975-76, also serving several years as a member and Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee.

Bill is survived by three sons, Dennis (Theresa) Feeney of Austintown, OH; William (Deborah) Feeney II of Monroe, CT; and Richard Feeney of Putnam Valley. He will truly be missed by his ten grandchildren, Brian Spears, Brock (Sharon) Spears, Dennis (Allison Sullivan) Feeney, Jr., Jill (Timothy) DeRenzo, Timothy (Belinda Karpf) Feeney, Bridget Feeney, McKenna Feeney, Emma Feeney, Hannah Feeney, and Connor Feeney; five great-grandchildren, HeatherRose and Brock Spears; Christopher and Daniel DeRenzo; and Rowan Sullivan-Feeney; two step great-grandchildren, Kevin Snyder and Samantha Snyder. He will also be missed by all who knew and loved him dearly, including son-in-law James Gorman, former daughter-in-law Caroline Oschwald, as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. 

He was predeceased by his devoted wife, Lillian Feeney; beloved daughters Rosemary Spears and Nancy Beth Gorman; daughter-in-law Patrice Feeney; son-in-law Philip Spears; as well as two sisters and four brothers.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation hours on Friday, December 8 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, 35 Morrissey Drive, Putnam Valley, NY 10579. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 9 at North American Martyrs Church, Lake Peekskill, NY. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Cortlandt, NY.
